Baldur's Gate 3: How to Save Baelen (BG3)
How many ways to save a lost mushroom picker?
If you’ve traversed the Underdark, there’s a good chance you’ve met the gruff wife of a mushroom-picking gnome. Her husband’s gone missing, and wouldn’t you know it. He’s surrounded by the worst mushrooms possible. Fortunately, there’s a way to save him without blowing up straight to the overworld. Here’s how to save Baelen in Baldur’s Gate 3.
The Underdark has no shortage of terrible things that want to kill you and your friends. There’s the thing that lurks beneath the ground, the creature in the trees, the grumpy dwarves. But even worse than all that is the bibberbang. These highly dangerous mushrooms release spores that will damage you. But even look at them wrong and they’ll explode. And, unfortunately, Baelen has found himself deeply entrenched in a nest of them.
But don’t worry. We’ve got a whole arsenal of ways to save him.
Method 1:
The easiest method to save Baelen in BG3 is to use the Misty Step spell to zip right over to Baelen’s Pack. This pack contains… you guessed it, a Scroll of Misty Step. You’ll then need to pass a strength throw of 10 to chuck it over to Balen, which my warlock failed. Damn their spindly arms. But if you succeed, Baelen will use this scroll to remove himself from danger.
Misty Step is an early spell that your spellcasters will have access to as they level. It’s extremely helpful both in and out of battle, so I recommend it. But if you don’t have it, it’s easy to find a vendor who sells a potion or scroll that offers the benefit.
Method 2:
Failing that, you can also use Mage Hand to throw the bag at him. This will save you from having to do the strength check and in general it’s a great way to get around traps.
Method 3:
Players who prefer a more bulky build might also have the strength necessary to make the long jump to the bag without needing Misty Step. From there, you’ll also need to throw the pack at Balen to save him.

Method 4:
But if none of these methods are available to you, you can force Baelen to make a run for it. To do this, and have him survive, you’ll need to step a little forward into the bibberbang. Throw water at the torch at the back, to stop the noxious fumes from exploding.
Next, throw a healing potion at Baelen to give him enough health to make the run.
Trigger the bibberbang, and Baelen will run out. If he has enough health, he’ll survive. And now you can speak to his wife back at the mycoid camp to claim your reward.
You’re a stone’s throw from the Sussur tree, and it’s likely you have the masterwork plans from the Blighted Village. If that’s the case, you’ll need to get that Sussure Tree Bark. But for many players, this winds up being a problem. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to find the tree hide that you need.
